I was surprised when she called me at work to give me the heads up that we were going to Karl Umlauf's last show and artist talk at Baylor's Martin Museum.
My senior year I had the privilege of being a student in Karl Umlauf's painting class. He was an amazing instructor; really insightful and encouraging. I recall hours spent in his office flipping through artist's books and being especially impacted by a book on Robert Rauschenberg.
At the show I was visiting with another former professor of mine and he shared that Karl has so much work he has to give it away because if his kids inherit it all they wouldn't be able to afford the taxes on it ... Interesting.
All that to say, I'm grateful for my time around this legendary artist and his prolific career.
